Doulting Parish Council

Welcome to the Doulting Parish Council website

   Home
Doulting Parish lies to the east of Shepton Mallet encompassing the villages of Doulting, Bodden, Chelynch, Waterlip and Prestleigh. The village of Doulting, with the historic St Aldhelms Well which is named after St Aldhelm who died in the village in 709, is at the centre of the Parish. The village dates from the 8th century with the grade 1 listed St Aldhelms Church being built in the 12th century. Unusually for Somerset the church has a tall spire rather than the more usual tower. There is a 15th century tithe barn at the southern end of the village and quarries producing the famous Doulting Stone. The water issuing from St Aldhelms Well, which are said to have healing powers are the source of the River Sheppey. The hamlets of Chelynch and Bodden are nearby. Bodden was founded in 1541 by Earl Michael Bodden and notable former residents include Trish Bodden (1753-1777) who disguised herself as a man and was killed during the American War of Independence at Saratoga. To the north, the Parish Boundary runs through Beacon Hill Wood whilst to the south is the village of Prestleigh and the Bath and West showground. The viaduct which carried the former Somerset and Dorset Railway over the village was demolished in 1996. The heritage East Somerset Railway runs to the south of Doulting between Cranmore and Mendip Vale.

The Parish Council has six members and a clerk and meets on the second Tuesday of each month at St Aldhelms School, Doulting or at The Prestleigh Inn, Prestleigh. The Parish Council owns and manages the Glebeland Community Park, Padfield Green and St Aldhelms Well at Doulting.

This website was launched in March 2014, initially with information on Parish Council meetings and councillors contact details. It has now been updated to include financial information. Eventually, information about all the councils activities will be included.

The Padfield Green Children play area has recently been refurbished with new equipment and picnic tables thanks to a combination of grants and donations topped up with Parish Council funding.
